IoT sensing for ponics: what to measure and why
pH, EC, DO, temperature, humidity and CO2 — the signals that keep a recirculating system healthy.

The minimum viable sensor stack
A reliable ponics system watches both the root zone and the aerial environment. The root zone tells you what the plant is drinking; the air tells you what it is breathing.
- Root zone: pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), water temperature.
- Aerial: air temperature, relative humidity, CO2, light intensity (PPFD).
Turning readings into action
Raw numbers are not enough. We feed them into control logic that adjusts dosing, ventilation and lighting before conditions drift out of range. Alerts are a fallback, not the primary loop.
Every reading is timestamped and stored, so you can correlate a nutrient change with a yield change weeks later — that is where the real optimization happens.
